Within the period from February 8 until March 31, AB Lietuvos paštas organized already traditional elections of the most beautiful postage stamp of Lithuania. During the elections, having lasted for almost two months, the majority of residents gave their votes and the title of the most beautiful postage stamp of Lithuania was awarded to the postage stamp The Worldwide Regatta of Sailing Ships (author Henrikas Ratkevičius).

The postage stamp The Worldwide Regatta of Sailing Ships issued last year, on the 25^th of July, was dedicated to the worldwide regatta of sailing ships The Tall Ship’s Races Baltic 2009 held in summer in Klaipėda. Nominal value of the stamp is 3 litas, the yacht Brabander is depicted on it. Postage stamps dedicated to the regatta of sailing ships were printed in sheets composed of 6 stamps with coupons depicting the emblem of the regatta.

The regularly scheduled coach service company Ecolines and Lithuania Post expand services provided: starting with the 1^st of April, customers will be able to obtain international coach tickets in 142 post offices located throughout Lithuania. This expand of services will enable the residents of small towns and rural areas to purchase tickets in a more convenient and quick manner saving on additional costs. Ecolines will be the only company in Lithuania selling coach tickets to international destinations not only in its travel agencies, but in the post offices of Lithuania Post as well.

While implementing the new service, the employees working in the post offices of Lithuania Post were trained to work with special programmes and given consultations on difficult issues. In total, more than 200 employees of Lithuania Post were trained by Ecolines.

On the 23^rd of February, in Vilnius, the shopping and business centre Europa, the first payment collection terminal in Lithuania Mokomatas was introduced to the representatives of the press. With the help of the terminal, which is similar to automated teller machines, users will be able to pay bills for services provided by more than 1500 different enterprises and institutions in a quick and convenient way.

“Today the five terminals Mokomatas were put into operation in Lithuania. The terminals were offered to the Lithuanian market by the companies AB Lietuvos paštas and UAB ERP, cooperating under a lease agreement,” said the CEO of AB Lietuvos paštas Andrius Urbonas during the introduction of the terminal. “Lithuania Post is leasing the terminals from the company ERP for symbolic commissions”.

On the 20^th of February, AB Lietuvos paštas will issue three postage stamps from the continuous series Coats of Arms depicting the coats of arms of Šilalė, Jonava, and Varėna. Together with the newest postage stamps the first day cover and souvenir sheet will be issued.

The face value of the postage stamp showing the Šilalė arms is 1,35 litas, the artist is Laima Ramonienė. The face value of the postage stamp dedicated to the Jonava arms is 2 litas, the artist is Rolandas Rimkūnas. The face value of the postage stamp depicting the Varėna arms is 2,15 litas, the artist is Kęstutis Gvalda.

AB Lietuvos paštas announces the start of the annual elections of the most beautiful postage stamps and invites everyone to vote for the postage stamps they liked most in 2009.

Please vote for your preferable postage stamp from 8 February to 31 March on the website www.post.lt and express your opinion which postage stamp deserves to win.

On 12-28 February the XXI Olympic Winter Games will take place in Vancouver (Canada). On this occasion AB Lietuvos paštas on 30 January issued postage stamp “XXI Olympic Winter Games. Vancouver”.

The postage stamp with the image of the mountain skier was issued in the edition of 150 thousand. The stamp was designed by Henrikas Ratkevičius, its nominal value – 2,45 LTL. The postage stamps were printed in "Österreichishe Staatsdrukerei GmbH" printing-house in Austria.

Today the Ministry of Transport and Communications hosted the meting of the Board of AB Lietuvos paštas, during which the CEO of Lithuania Post introduced the measures allowing to reduce the planned loss more than two times already this year and to increase the salaries of postmen up to 10 percent.

„The Board of the company in today’s meeting approved the action plan aimed at stabilisation of the company’s financial situation and modernization of its activity, - said Director General Andrius Urbonas. – One of the core measures – implementation of the new company’s management structure, which includes centralising of majority of the similar administrative functions and reducing the number of positions, which are not directly related to the postal activities“. According to A. Urbonas, the staff costs in the company make about 70 percent of all costs, and the administrative chain throughout whole Lithuania yet has inner resources.

Starting from the beginning of December the flows of Lietuvos paštas started to grow, increasing workload for the postal employees in the whole country.

The approaching season of great winter festivals is both pleasant and intensive period to Lietuvos paštas, as the volumes of mail raise several times.” – said Director General of AB Lietuvos paštas Andrius Urbonas.

On the 16th November the 91st anniversary of the establishment of Lietuvos paštas was commemorated. On this occasion Vilnius main post office hosted the exhibition of postage stamps, there was organized the competition of the children paintings, the best employees of the company were awarded. Lietuvos paštas also organized the exhibition of postage stamps in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.

„Today Lietuvos paštas is celebrating 91st birthday. This organization, famous with its old traditions, reaching the most distant areas of the country everyday, is one of the most prominent examples of social responsibility in the country. – said director general of AB Lietuvos paštas Andrius Urbonas. – The greatest value of Lietuvos paštas today is the employees. So on the occasion of this nice event I wish to all my 8000 and more colleagues best luck, good health and positive attitude“.

On this day 91 years ago Lietuvos paštas – the largest provider of postal services and one of the largest employers in Lithuania - was established. The day will be marked by special events in various places of Vilnius.

AB Lietuvos paštas together with the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Union of Lithuanian Philatelists will start the celebratory program consisting of three parts in Vilnius main post office (Gedimino pr. 7). At 10 the fair of postage stamps opens, in which the members of the Union of Lithuanian Philatelists will introduce their collections and will share the experience of collecting postage stamps.

On the 7th of November AB Lietuvos paštas issues the last two postage stamps of 2009 from the series “Holy Christmas and New Year”.

Together with the new postage stamp first day souvenir sheet and first day cover will be issued. On the same day postal correspondence items paid by these postage stamps will be cancelled with the first day issue cancel in Vilnius main post office.

Services of AB Lietuvos paštas are from now on available in the shopping centre „Panorama“ (Saltoniškių g. 9), in which the 4th Vilnius post office located on 3 November of this year.

The post office moved to these premises from Studentų street. It will be open to the customers seven days a week. The working hours of the post office are extended to be more convenient to the customers: Monday-Friday from 8.00 to 20.00, Saturday from 10.00 to 19.00, Sunday – from 10.00 to 17.00 (without lunch break).

On 23 October AB Lietuvos paštas hosted a meeting with the representatives of Association of Lithuanian Press Publishers with the aim to discuss the matters of cooperation between AB Lietuvos paštas and the publishers in 2010.

„We clearly understand the complicated situation of the publishers of periodicals and also the necessity to ensure the spread of periodicals to the most distant areas of the country, therefore we shall not increase the tariffs for handling of subscription for the next year, - said Director General of AB Lietuvos paštas Andrius Urbonas. – However being one of the largest employers in the country and feeling the responsibility for more than 8000 employees, we will not be able to provide loss making services in the future“.

On 27 October a new division of Vilnius main post office was opened in Vilnius, in supermarket “Maxima bazė“ (Savanorių pr. 247).

Just as the 11th post office in the shopping centre „Akropolis“, the new sub-post office will be serving the customers not only on working days, but also on Saturdays and Sundays.

AB Lietuvos paštas seeking to further minimize the costs of the company’s activity is planning to reorganize 72 loss-making rural post offices by the end of this year.

Since 2 November the reorganization is planned in 35 post offices, in December – 37 post offices. These posts incurred more than 2,3 million loss in 2008, that is on average 32 thousand litas each.

„AB Lietuvos paštas pays particular attention to the quality of service. Recently the performance of the company has improved, however we wish to make use of all available means to make it even better, therefore we expect that experience of the experts from the other countries will be really useful”, - said Director for Operations Gintaras Šegžda.

On 12 October 2009 Vice-minister of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Lithuania and Member of the Board of AB Lietuvos paštas Rimvydas Vaštakas officially introduced the new Director General of AB Lietuvos paštas Andrius Urbonas.

„One of the main priorities is to create an organization which is attractive both to the customers and employees. As any enterprise, the post must be a profitable institution, also ensuring the provision of high quality services“ – said the new director general, introducing his future plans.

On 25 July Lietuvos paštas issues new postage stamp “Yachting regatta” dedicated to the „The Tall Ship‘s Races“. The first races were organized in Great Britain 53 years ago. The possibility to invite the participants of these prestigious races is the matter of honour to every coastal state. Klaipėda was striving to become one of the hosting ports for a decade. So this year the competing ships will finish in Klaipėda.

The new postage stamp has an image of the Lithuanian sailing ship „Brabander“, which will participate in this regatta for the first time.

On the 4 July 2009, on the occasion of the approaching public holiday – Day of Coronation of Mindaugas, the King of Lithuania (1253), AB Lietuvos paštas issued the last souvenir sheet „1000 anniversary of Lithuania“.

The series of souvenir sheets, dedicated to the commemoration of the millennium of name of Lithuania was launched in 2001, have 9 souvenir sheets. Each of them represents important events of the history of Lithuania since 1009 till nowadays.

On 1-6th of July Millennium Song Festival of Lithuania „Song of the Centuries“ will take place in Vilnius. This Song Festival, dating back to 1924, the participants of which are both adults and students, will be one of the greatest events in celebration of the Millennium of Lithuania.

On this occasion 27 of June Lietuvos Paštas issued a postage stamp designed by Henrikas Ratkevičius „Millenium Song Festival of Lithuania „Song of the Centuries“. Nominal value of postage stamp – 3,35 LTL, edition – 500 thousand. The stamps were printed in "Österreichishe Staatsdrukerei GmbH" printing-house in Austria.

On the 1st of May of this year new post office was opened in shopping centre „Mandarinas“, Ateities g. 91, in Vilnius city district Fabijoniškės. Modern post office will be open to the customers six days a week – from Monday to Saturday.

In the new post office there is full range of services offered: customers can send letters, postcards, small packets, registered and insured mail items, also can acquire envelopes, postcards, philatelic production, subscribe to periodicals, pay charges and fees, collect insurance and other payments, use services of consumer credit, send money orders, buy courier mail services, collect mail items, mail order items, etc.

Meeting the approaching Millennium of Lithuania, Vilnius became European Capital of Culture 2009. On this occasion Lietuvos Paštas on 11 April issues postage stamp “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture” with the planned edition of 300 thousand, nominal value of which – 2,15 LTL. The author of new postage stamp - artist Henrikas Ratkevičius. The stamps are printed in "Österreichishe Staatsdrukerei GmbH" printing-house in Austria.

Together with the new postage stamp dedicated to European capital of culture – Vilnius, first day souvenir sheet and first day cover will be issued. On 11 April postal correspondence items paid by these postage stamps was cancelled with the first day issue cancel in Vilnius main post office.

From 19th of January to 15th March PLC Lietuvos Paštas organized traditional elections of the most beautiful Lithuanian postage stamp. More than 29 thousand voters – that is 4 thousand more than last year - expressed their opinion in the elections, which lasted almost two months.

The set „WWF. European Roller“, issued on 6^th of September (artist - Aušrelė Ratkevičienė) was elected as the most beautiful postage stamp in the category of adults. The set consists of four postage stamps with the endangered birds included into Lithuanian Red Book – European rollers. The second most beautiful was the postage stamp „400th Anniversary of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Šiluva“ (artist – Rūta Ona Čigriejūtė). The third place went to the souvenir sheet "1000th Anniversary of Lithuania”, which consists of six postage stamps (artist – Irma Balakauskaitė).

PLC Lietuvos Paštas, which participates in international philatelic project “Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers”, on the 27th of March issued new souvenir sheet, related to the topic of the project.

The aim of the project uniting 40 postal operators is to draw attention to the climate change, global warming and other topical issues of the protection of environment. The countries, which joined this project, are issuing postage stamps on this topic at the time freely chosen within the period of January-March.

Considering current economic situation and market trends of the country, Lietuvos Paštas continues optimisation of its activity. From the 1st of April of this year the company restructures region main post offices and reduces the number of employees in the administrations of the branches by 15%

The first steps of optimising the activity of Lietuvos Paštas were made on the 1st of March of this year, when the number of the employees in company’s central headquarters was reduced by 10 percent.

“These changes will allow to decrease the costs incurred by the company, will centralise the management and the organization of the company’s activities, - said director general of Lietuvos Paštas Ernestas Vaidelys. – They will also enable further purposeful conduction of the company’s mission – providing quality courier and postal services throughout Lithuania.

Company’s structure before 1 April 2009

PLC Lietuvos Paštas aiming to implement measures for optimising working processes, reducing incurred costs and simplifying management of the company, as set in strategic activity plan for 2009-2011, reinforces cooperation with trade unions.

The project of new collective agreement will be started to prepare in the nearest future. Considering the proposals and remarks on working, social, economic conditions and setting of guarantees provided by working groups and employees of company’s branches, the project will be coordinated and discussed with representatives of joint body of two trade unions – Lithuania communications workers and PLC Lietuvos Paštas trade union. The signing of new agreement is planned by the 17th of July of this year.

The elections of the most beautiful postage stamp, annually organized by Philatelic department, were started on the 19th of January. They will last until the 15th of March of this year. Everyone is invited to vote for the favourite stamps of 2008.

The participants of the elections should fill-in special form, which can be found in all post offices or on the website of Lietuvos Paštas. They should be sent to Philatelic department of PLC Lietuvos Paštas, at the address Giedraičių g. 60A, 08212 Vilnius (postage is paid by Lietuvos Paštas). The voting forms can also be handed-in to the employees of any post office or sent by e-mail G.Statulevicius@post.lt.

This week modern electronic queue management system was launched in Vilnius and Kaunas region main post offices, which will enable simple and efficient regulation of the flows of the clients, giving each person an individual service number.

The company “Hansab” implemented these technologies in the central branches of “Lietuvos Paštas” in the two largest cities of the country. Analogue systems are already used by tens of other organizations, including banks, customer service divisions of various enterprises, state institutions.

The most intensive period of the year has already started in Lithuania Post. When the winter festivals are approaching, the volumes of postal items sent and received via Lithuania Post are 5-6 times larger than on regular months. While facing the increased work strain it would be helpful to have more gradual flows of postal items - it would much facilitate processes of the company.

Since 19th of November of this year the subscription to periodicals for 2009 is accepted in all post offices of Lithuania. The periodicals subscribed are delivered to the customers at the indicated addresses every day, except for Sundays, public holidays and in some rural areas also except for Mondays. The subscription for the whole period of 2009 is only accepted until 17th of December of this year.

On the 16th of November of 2008 Lithuania post celebrated 90th anniversary since its establishment. In 1918 on this day the Minister of Transport and Communications Martynas Yčas established Board of the Post, the first head of which was assigned Benediktas Tomaševičius. In the first year of activity the network of Lithuania post comprised 18 post offices. On the 27th of December of the same year the first Lithuania’s postage stamps were published.

On the 8th of November Lithuania Post issued the last two postage stamps of 2008 from the series “Holy Christmas and New Year”. They are devoted to the approaching greatest festivals of the year. On the same day postal correspondence items paid by these postage stamps was cancelled with the first day issue cancel in Vilnius region main post office.

The first stamp pictures a branch of a tree with red berries covered with snow. Its nominal value - 1,35 LTL, the edition – 1,90 million. This Christmas postage stamp is meant for payment of non-priority postal items up to 20 g sent within Lithuania.

This year Lithuania Post commemorated the World Post Day by various events – on the 7^th of October a new post office was opened in Elektrėnai, postmen were given postmen’ badges of honour, on the 9^th of October – the World Post Day – the winners of letter writing competition were awarded and the exhibition of children creations - “Art of post” - was opened in Vilnius region main post office.

Young writers awarded

The winners of the 37^th letter writing competition organized by International Bureau of Universal Postal Union were invited to Vilnius on the 9^th of October. The students and their teachers were awarded with the diplomas and gifts of Lithuania Post and of other institutions, which helped to organized this competition. The first place was granted to Justina Vaitkunskytė from Lentvaris, the second was divided to Karolis Galdikas from Šventoji and Domantas Paluckas from Panevėžys region and third place went to Milda Venckutė from Klaipėda, Justė Kviesulaitytė from Vilkaviškis and Giedrė Juškauskaitė from Alytus region.

On the occasion of the coming World Post Day, Lithuania Post has opened new post office in the centre of Elektrėnai on the 7^th of October of this year. There are 9 post offices in the whole Elektrėnai municipality at the moment and the employees of new post office will serve more than 14 thousand residents and visitors of Elektrėnai.

The opportunity to visit new post office and to welcome new personnel was taken by the Minister of Transport and Communications Mr Algirdas Butkevičius, members of the Board of Lithuania Post, vice-mayor of Elektrėnai town, Director General of Lithuania Post Mr Ernestas Vaidelys, other managers of the company and its branches.

On the 26 of July Lithuania Post issues series of two postage stamps “XXIX Olympic games”, dedicated to summer Olympics, which will take place on the 8^th-24^th of August 2008 in capital of China – Beijing. The author of the stamps is artist Sergijus Luzinas, edition – 300 thousand each, nominal value – 2,15 Lt and 2,45 Lt. They were printed in "Österreichishe Staatsdrukerei GmbH" printing-house in Austria (Vien­na).

On the 15th of July of this year Lithuania celebrates the 75^th anniversary of the transatlantic flight performed by Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas. To commemorate this anniversary PLC Lietuvos paštas on the 12^th of July issues postage stamp “75^th Anniversary of S.Darius and S.Girėnas Flight”.

On the same day postal correspondence items paid by these postage stamps will be cancelled with the first day issue cancel in Kaunas Region Main Post Office.

On the 14th of June 2008 global exhibition „EXPO Zaragoza 2008“ will start in Spain, in which Lithuania will introduce its exposition among more than 100 countries. On this occasion Lithuania Post launches postage stamp “Global exhibition „EXPO Zaragoza 2008“, which denotes Lithuania’s participation in this grand event. Postal correspondence paid by this postage stamp will be cancelled with the first day cancellation on the same day – June 14^th, in Vilnius region main post office. Stamps are designed by artist Eglė Žiedelė, edition – 300 thousand, nominal value – 2,45 Lt.

This year Lithuania celebrates the 20^th anniversary of the Sąjūdis Reform Movement. Twenty years ago Lithuanian people striving to liberate from the Soviet occupation regime, created a unique mass and organized movement known as the Sąjūdis Reform Movement, later renamed Lithuanian Sąjūdis.

The 3^rd of June 1988 is considered to be its foundation day. Initially it was a small initiative group composed of 35 prominent scientists and artists of Lithuania, but after several months it was joined by hundreds of thousands of people. The foundation date marks a decisive stage in Lithuania’s liberation history. The Sąjūdis support groups were emerging throughout Lithuania; meetings, pickets, and actions taking place demonstrated the nation’s striving for freedom and independence. Almost after two years, on the 11^th of March 1990, the Sąjūdis achieved its aim – the independence of Lithuania was restored.

The competition of the most impressive stamp of 2007, organized by Philatelic Department of Lithuania Post, has come to an end. The most impressive stamp represents “Ensemble of St. Ann and Bernardines churches in Vilnius” from the series “Churches of Lithuania” (painter – G. Luzinienė). The stamp won even 69872 votes. The second place was taken by a block of stamps “1000^th anniversary of Lithuania” (painter – H. Ratkevičius) acquiring 54446 points. The third place went to the joint Lithuanian-Belarussian issue of stamps called “The nature of Čepkeliai and Katra reserves” No 474-475 (painters – V. Bručienė and A. Mityanin). The issue of the stamps received 50567 points.

On 11 July 2007 the Government agreed to the newly established maximum tariffs of universal postal services. The tariffs would guarantee the funds required for secure provision of universal postal services and its quality improvement as well as modernization of the facilities to provide postal services. The newly established tariffs will come into force from 1 September 2007. Public Limited Company Lietuvos paštas may apply lower but not higher tariffs than the established ones.

On the 15^th of February, 2007, the Board of the PLC Lietuvos paštas elected Ernestas Vaidelys as Director General of the Public Limited Company Lietuvos paštas.

On 5^nd February, the Board of the Public Limited Company Lietuvos Paštas considered the request of Director General of PLC Lietuvos Paštas Mr. Jonas Šalavėjus to resign as director general, effective 5^th February. The Board satisfied the request and thanked Mr. Jonas Šalavėjus for many years of conscientious work in the postal system of Lithuania.

Lithuanian Post and Estonian Post made an agreement with Estonian corporation Matkaja on goods consignment. That should interest hunting enthusiasts.

During the visit of The Queen of the United Kingdom Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh Philip to Lithuania, PLC Lietuvos paštas had the honour of delivering post to the Royal Family. One of the Royal Mail’s obligations is to ensure a daily delivery of Her Majesty’s post during her visits to different countries, therefore the Royal Mail asked for Lithuania Post’s cooperation.
