ROYAL PALACE OF LITHUANIA
The Royal Palace of the Vilnius Lower Castle, whose origins date from the 13th century, was the political, administrative and cultural centre of Lithuania. The oldest brick and stone foundations in the country were found at this location. The Palace was renowned throughout Europe for its library and collection of art. The first opera performances in Lithuania were staged here.
The Palace, to be rebuilt by 2009 for the celebration marking the millennium of the earliest known mention of Lithuania in written records, will serve as a centre for official functions, cultural and educational events.
